Domitianus II (usurper)

Reece Period attributed: Period 13

Obverse image of a coin of Domitianus II (usurper)

Member of the The Gallic Emperors dynasty.

Coins for this issuer were issued from 271 until 271.

This usurper is identified with the general Domitian mentioned in the Historia Augusta as the most trusted and bravest officer of Aureolus. If this is accurate, Domitian may have made a bid for power when Aureolus sent him to Cologne as envoy to Postumus; perhaps he had a brief reign just after the death of Postumus or Marius.
