Lucilla

Reece Period attributed: Period 8

Obverse image of a coin of Lucilla

Member of the The Antonines dynasty.

Coins for this issuer were issued from 164 until 169.

Lucilla was the younger daughter of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina. Her father betrothed her to Lucius Verus (legally his brother) to cement their alliance.

After Lucius’ death in 169, Marcus Aurelius forced her to marry an older ally of his, which she and Faustina resisted. This second husband died on campaign, however, and she only bore him one daughter.

Lucilla is also remembered for her part in a conspiracy against Commodus, her younger brother, whose temper and irrational behaviour she grew to fear. She was exiled to and eventually executed on Capri with her sister and daughter by Commodus’ agents.
