Andrea Gritti was elected doge in 1523 after a long and prosperous career as a military commander and diplomat. Peace resulted from Gritti eventually allying Venice with France, though he was later to engage in war with the Ottomans after they attacked the Venetian-held island of Corfu in 1537. Gritti died one year later. He is buried in the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice.
