The Contarini family were one of the most powerful and influential families in Venice at the time. Andrea Contarini was one of eight members of the family to be elected as Doge. Andrea Contarini became famous for melting down his gold and silver plate for the benefit of the state and for successfully leading the Republic in war against the Genoese at the battle of Chioggia in 1379. Andrea Contarini is buried in the Chiesa di Santo Stefano.
