Michele Steno was elected Doge in the year 1400 but was already a well known figure due to his indecent comments about the wife of Doge Marino Faliero (1354-5) made at a ball in 1355. Steno was evicted from the ball by Faliero and retaliated by carving the following verse on the Doges chair: ‘Marin Falier with the beautiful wife, others enjoy her while he maintains her.’ Soldini of Michele Steno are the second most commonly found Venetian coin in England. Michele Steno is buried in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
