Details for surface detail Black coated

Use for the black coating (often called black lacquer) characteristic of some late medieval/early post-medieval copper-alloy objects. The black coating is thought to be the decayed result of applying hot linseed oil to the surface, ironically intended to give a warm, reddish-gold or brown colour to the metal.
