I am researching the impact of the Devil's Causeway, Northumberland (Margary's Roman Road 87) on the settlement patterns in the area between the Coquet and the Wansbeck rivers in the post Roman periods.
This is part of a larger project "Cocwudu" administered by the Bernician Studies Group, www.bernicianstudies.eu. Cocwudu is a historic landscape and woodland between the Wansbeck, Font and Coquet rivers in Northumberland. One of the notable landscape features running through the Cocwudu area is the Devil's Causeway. Therefore all sources of information on this feature should be examined with a view to assessing its influence on the area in the Roman, post Roman and indeed later periods of history.
I am currently studying key settlement sites along the Devil's Causeway using place name evidence, the HER, the PAS, archaeological excavation reports, early medieval sculpture records etc. to build a picture of how each settlement site has evolved. It would therefore be very useful to have a higher level of access to the PAS and become a research level user.
I am working on this project part time so I estimate I would need this level of access for 18 months.
