Roman Conquest of Northern Britain

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Undergraduate

I am a second-year undergraduate student at Durham University studying Archaeology and Ancient History. For my dissertation I intend to explore conflict which took place during the Roman conquest and occupation of Northern Britain - specifically I currently intend to focus on Cumbria. I am hoping to be able to become a research level user as I would like to use finds pertaining to weaponry and armour such as ballista bolts, swords, slingshots and arrowheads in order to try and locate sites where conflict took place. I would use this information in collaboration with other sources in order to gain a better understanding about the wider context of the sites and any potential conflict which took place and why. I then intend to explore how this data could help inform us about sites of conflict in areas where access to finds is more limited. For example, areas of Southern Scotland like Dumfries and Galloway which are not covered by the Portable Antiquities Scheme. I do not yet know the deadline for my dissertation however my research will not continue longer than June 2022 as the deadline is most probably April/May 2022.
