I am an undergraduate student in BA Archaeology, undertaking a GIS based dissertation which would benefit from the application of the full extent of the PAS database. The project focuses on the distribution and character of Iron Age settlement in the proximity of the modern city of Winchester. Therefore, not only will it focus upon the settlement sites themselves, but on agricultural sites, burial sites, and find spots. Access to the database as a research level user would therefore, greatly aid in this project.
The study area includes the cluster of settlements within close proximity to the modern city such as those at Oram's Arbour, St Catherine's Hill, and Winnall Down, and at its perimeter, are those at Micheldever Woods, Oliver's Battery, Bramdean, Owlesbury, the enclosure at Farley Mount, and lastly the settlement at Worthy Down. The dissertation aims to assess the relationship between these sites and subsequently to explore whether the application of LiDaR among other remote sensed datasets, can provide any new information on settlement within the study area.
