Medieval copper-alloy dress accessories from York and Yorkshire

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

I am applying for an upgrade in status to research level so as to better conduct my research for my Masters dissertation-I am studying for a MA in Medieval Archaeology from the University of York. My research is on later medieval copper-alloy dress accessories from York and Yorkshire. There are two key questions that I seek to answer through this research: first, what is the distribution and quantity of late-medieval (11th-century-15th century) copper-alloy dress accessories found in York and Yorkshire?; second, what can this class of object tell us about everyday life in medieval Yorkshire-specifically, is there a divide between rural and urban styles and quantities? One of the objectives of this project is to gather data together from archival records of excavations, published monographs, grey literature, and PAS to build a database of later medieval copper-alloy dress accessories found in Yorkshire. Part of this project will attempt to determine patterns of chronology and style through GIS mapping so I would like access to more specific find spots to complete this part of my research, especially to better understand the links between the urban centre of York and its surrounding rural areas.

The length of time for this project is 5 months from now until September 2020.

Referee: Dr. Aleksandra McClain, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of York.
