My name is Ross Humphreys and I am a MA Artefact Studies student at the Institute of Archaeology at UCL. I am applying for research access to the PAS to provide a dataset for my dissertation project, provisionally entitled Rome Resistant? Local Identity and Coinage Use in Roman Cornwall.
This study will attempt to investigate the relationship between coin use and identity in the south-western region of Britannia known today as Cornwall. Using data from PAS, recorded coin hoards and excavation reports, as well as comparison with other regions in Roman Britannia, it will be possible to consider the ambiguous economic and social relationship between the Roman state and communities based in Cornwall. Also a part of this study is the challenging of preconceptions regarding the archaeological use of coinage, focussing on the idea of group identity as opposed to more common themes of economy and chronology.
This study will terminate on 13/09/19 and will culminate in a 15,000 word piece of work which forms a large part of my MA as a whole.
