Ouse and Derwent Project 2017-2019

North Duffield Conservation and Local History Society's Ouse and Derwent project investigates the Iron Age (800BC - 100AD) in the ancient Wapentake of Ouse and Derwent and centres on the occupation of three local villages; Hemingbrough (2017) North Duffield (2018), and Wheldrake (2019).

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund the major project builds on a previous project in 2011, also Heritage Lottery Funded, which discovered Iron Age pottery and findings which dated back to the Neolithic Period, providing evidence that people had lived on this landscape for a minimum of 5,000 years.

The project endeavours to work with local schools, residents and people with disabilities, with a focus on the deaf community, and provides opportunities to receive training in archaeological techniques, learn new skills and a chance to understand the environment in which they lived.

The land south of York and between the river Ouse and the river Derwent is an area of approximately 300km2, an area which, in the main, is flat agricultural land, land which is rarely investigated archaeologically through PPG16. The information provided by metal detectors to the Portable Antiquities Scheme is therefore a vital resource in helping us understand the occupation of this land through time: identifying not only the hotspots of finds but also the chronology through the dating of these finds.

I am requesting research access for three reasons:

1. To provide supporting information to the Desktop Assessment for this summer's excavation in Wheldrake.
2. To provide valuable clues to the development of this environment and its people and provide a wider context to the project.
3. To further research the whole area to support and or inform our conclusions in the final report for the whole project.

I anticipate that the research should take two, years allowing for the writing up of the final report and therefore request access until March 31st 2021
