As part of the University of York's archaeology undergraduate programme, a dissertation is conducted in the third year. In this dissertation, supervised by Prof. Dawn Hadley, I am building on her work with Julian Richards on the Viking Great Army's archaeological signature. Their recent paper was published in Medieval Settlement Research, and in my dissertation I will focus on sites they identified in the Yorkshire Wolds with this signature. In order to properly assess these sites, and their history both before and after the putative visit of the Great Army, detailed accounts of the metal detected finds from the region are of great importance. Thus, an upgrade to research level would prove to be massively beneficial to the study.
