Archaeology of Witchcraft in the 17th Century

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

I am a Masters student at the Universtiy of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and I would like to request that my account be upgraded to research level, so that I may gather more complete data on my chosen subject, the archaeology of witchcraft and counter-witchcraft during the 17th Century.

I intend to use the information gathered from the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) as part of my MSci dissertation to study and compare the archaeological evidence of witchcraft in 17th Century Britain and British colonies in North America. I plan to gather typological data about individual artefacts to to gain data on the form of object encountered, the age of the artefacts, and the contexts of their discovery. The data gathered will then be analysed and compared to see if any discernable differences in the practice of witchcraft developed in these two different areas. Data will also be gathered from American sources, as well as other British sources, to build a databse that will hopefully reflect the answer to this question.

Any locational information will be presented by use of the settlement or county the artefact was discovered in. Specific names and properties will not be mentioned, with only general references made as to the type of building the artefact was discovered in (for example, a farmhouse outside of York). I plan to have completed this project by the 29th April 2019, at which point the assignment will be submitted to UCLan as the final assignment of my fourth year.
