Exploring the evidence for links between Britain, Ireland and Frankia during the period that the Great Viking Army was raiding in England (865-880)

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

My masters dissertation topic aims to explore the evidence for links between Britain, Ireland and Frankia during the period that the Great Viking Army was raiding in England (865-880).

I am investigating the nature and impact of these links, such as:

  • the evidence for the composite nature of the great army and the diverse nature of their prior experiences;
  • the potential impact of cultural interaction facilitated by 'Viking' activity( raiding and trading)
  • the movement of individuals and different groups of 'Vikings' based in these regions;
  • the extent to which the activities of these groups of Vikings were inter-related and the potential dominance of Irish based Scandinavians in the campaigns of this period.

and examining historical and archaeological sources, including:

  • Chronicles from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Frankia
  • Metalwork recovered from metal detecting- including the finds from Wintercamps, Torksey and the unpublished site Aldwark and stray finds ( that can be tentatively linked to this period/activity)
  • Hoards dated to this period e.g., Croydon and Watlington,
  • Evidence from burials and settlements dated to the mid-late 9th century.
