Spindle Whorls in Early Medieval Britain

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Undergraduate

I am a third year Historical Archaeology undergraduate at the University of York. For my dissertation, I am using spindle whorls, as common domestic objects, to show the spread of Scandinavian culture in Early Medieval Britain. My aim is to add to knowledge of Early Medieval Britain in a social history context, as well as exploring modern social history resources by providing a critique of the PAS database and its use in historical/archaeological research.

I intend to use data from the PAS as the basis for my study of spindle whorls. As part of this, I intend to create maps so that I can show any patterns there may be in the form, style or function of these objects relative to their location. To do this, I will need research level access to the PAS database in order to plot the locations of the finds.
