Claudian copies in early Roman Britain

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Undergraduate

I am currently studying towards a BA Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Reading. As a part of this I am currently writing my undergraduate dissertation on Claudian copies in early Roman Britain.

I intend to compare data from the PAS database with that of Robert Kenyon and George Boon, from their excavations at Colchester and Usk respectively, to further test their conclusions regarding the origins of the coins and who was using them. Where possible, I plan to apply the grading system devised by Kenyon and analyse wear, as well as comparing these copies with contemporary official coinage to see if there are any differences in patterns of deposition. Depending on time allowance, I may extend my research to cover countermarking in this period, although there are not many examples of this in the PAS database.

Research level access to the PAS database will be beneficial for my dissertation as an increase in the quantity of data available and the accuracy of the spatial data will strengthen the conclusions that I reach.

My research will be completed by Friday the 24th of April 2015, as this is the deadline for the submission of my dissertation.
