The impact of Roman remains in the landscape on the social changes taking place in early medieval England

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: PhD level research

I would like to become a research level user in order to access a greater degree of information on find spots. I am in the first year of a PhD study (estimated 2014-18) into the impact of Roman remains in the landscape on the social changes taking place in early medieval England. The study uses three areas as case studies to create a national-scale dialogue, comprising Sussex, Devon and Cornwall, and the eastern part of the Roman military frontier (parts of the traditional counties of Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland).

As well as using site-based data, I would also like to test the feasibility of using the distribution of finds from the early medieval period to comment on the use of the landscape at that time.

The study is multi-scalar, using regional overviews, transects, and case studies of specific sites. Each of these scales requires a different degree of spatial accuracy for find spots, although the case studies, which are of the most focussed areas, will contain fewer find spots. The data can be included in the thesis in such a way as to maintain privacy for land owners and finders.

Many thanks,

Adam Goodfellow
