Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Personal research project
I am a full-time and permanent Lecturer in Roman Archaeology and History at Canterbury Christ Church University and the current Chair of the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference (TRAC). My personal research centres on life and interaction at the edges of the Roman empire, particularly in northern Britain and the near east. I am also interested in community and public archaeology, and the contribution of amateurs to our understanding of the past and its significance within the present. I would specifically like to use the PAS database for 3 key purposes:
1. To aid my teaching of archaeology and history students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Iron Age, Roman, and Early medieval finds are a key part of the modules that I teach, and I am encouraging my students to use the PAS database in order to find and research finds for use in classroom exercises, essays, and dissertations. I would also like to use select PAS data with spatial information as a relevant dataset for teaching students GIS in year 1 and 2 modules.
2. To keep abreast of the latest information on finds from the Roman northern frontier zone as a part of my ongoing (and permanent) research activities, using this to augment data from published excavations, surveys, and within the grey literature. I will also soon begin a new research project focused on Roman period Kent and Canterbury, and PAS data will be crucial to a more complete understanding of the region.
3. To help publicise the work of the PAS and its contributors through the sharing of finds via my active personal and organisational social media accounts.
