Caerau Hillfort Environs Project (Cardiff University)

Since 2011 I have been leading archaeological investigations at Caerau Hillfort, Cardiff, as part of a major AHRC funded research and community outreach project called the CAER Heritage Project. This is a collaborative project between Cardiff University and the communities of Caerau and Ely in west Cardiff. We are currently embarking on a 3rd season of fieldwork in July 2014, including excavation of the hillfort interior and a wider landscape investigation of the hillfort environs. It is crucial for this analysis that we are able to identify potential Bronze Age and Iron Age sites and activity areas surrounding the hillfort - this will be achieved by combining the analysis of aerial photographs with LiDAR data and finds data. With regards to the PAS finds data, accurate findspot data are required to plot finds within a GIS for analysis.

It is planned for at least 3 more seasons of fieldwork after 2014 and so we envisage the research of Caerau Hillfort and its environs to run until at least 2018.
