Report on 2010 excavation by Wessex Archaeology at Abbotts Barton, Winchester

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Major publication

I would like to request research level status. I am currently writing a report for Hampshire Studies on a 2010 excavation by Wessex Archaeology at Abbotts Barton, Winchester, which revealed a section of the Winchester-Silchester Roman Road, and an immediately adjacent early Saxon settlement.

An article by the Biddles (Winchester: from Venta to Wintancaestir, in Gilmour 2007, Pagans and Christianity from Antiguity to the Middle Ages) mentions a possible early Saxon cemetery at Abbotts Barton, indicated by 12 whole or part brooches, 11 of which were listed on the PAS database.

The description of their general location in the article suggests they may have been close to the excavation site, and if so this would certainly have a bearing on its interpretation, ie, the continued use of the Roman road and the relation of settlement to cemetery. My request for research status is therefore simply to try and determine those relationships, and I would not want to extend it beyond that.

Thank you
