The use of coin finds in the mid Anglo-Saxon period

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

Using the evidence of coin finds as recorded on the databases of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Corpus of Early Medieval Coin Finds, I intend to study the uses of coins in the mid Anglo-Saxon period (roughly AD 650 to AD 870) in the area of north Buckinghamshire, north Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. I will look at the type and origin of coins for evidence of communication, trade and perhaps political influence from the surrounding kingdoms. I will also look at the circumstances of find locations to assess any apparent relationships with settlements, communication routes (roads, rivers, pilgrimage), burial sites and potentially other finds. The findings will be compared to other studies carried out in East Anglia and the south of England.

This research is for a PGCert dissertation in Archaeology at the University of Oxford - for submission in July 2013.
