The contribution of metal detecting to the archaeology of Lincolnshire.

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

The focus of my research. Using a variety of investigative techniques, including the use of PAS data, to determine the contribution of metal detecting to the archaeology of Early Medieval Lincolnshire and through this to gain further insight and understanding into the development (parameters of data, location, time, etc) of the demographic, community, social, cultural, technological, belief systems and other characteristics of (historic) Lincolnshire during the Early Medieval Period.

Access to higher level PAS data would facilitate:

  • Accurate location of artefact finds.
  • Full details of the artefacts.
  • Details of how the discoveries were made .
  • Typological analysis of the artefacts.
  • The development of a range of data sets.
  • Spatial analysis of the datasets in the context of the characteristics listed above.

While current "input" and "activity data" of metal detectorists will also be collected (interviews and questionnaires) the focus and emphasis will be on "output data" from recorded finds and how the information gained through metal detecting (relative to other archaeological techniques) has increased our knowledge and understanding of Early Medieval Lincolnshire. As an aside it is hoped the information gained will result in the development of outreach activities leading to improvements in the scope, content and quality of metal detecting.
