Medieval pilgrimage in Britain

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Masters degree

I am an MPhil post-graduate student, studying part-time at Birmingham University, conducting research into medieval pilgrimage in Britain, with specific reference to medieval Worcester and its cathedral's two saints, Wulfstan and Oswald. My research is multidisciplinary, combining aspects of archaeology and history, as I will be using primary source material together with archaeology such as pilgrim badges and souvenirs, standing and excavated buildings and artefacts, and burials to build up a picture of the popularity othe cults of these two saints during the Middle Ages. GIS software is going to be used as one of the tools to analyse and present the findings of my research.

Specific findspot data will be very useful as part of this exercise, as it will allow distributions of artefacts and finds to be accurately stored, analysed and mapped, alongside all of the other evidence and data that I will have gathered. My MPhil is scheduled to take two years to complete, and I am now just commencing my second year, so my dissertation is due to be published in the summer of 2013. However, I may well progress onto a subsequent PhD, very possibly as an extension to the research I am doing now, and therefore would appreciate the access continuing through this period as well.
