The reuse of earlier landscapes for burial in early medieval Wessex

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: PhD level research

My PhD thesis investigates the reuse of earlier landscapes for burial in early medieval Wessex. The research, funded by a block grant from the AHRC, will look specifically at the relationship between Anglo-Saxon burials and Neolithic to Roman landscape features, such as monuments, earthworks, cemeteries, field systems, temples and secular buildings.

The area of study incorporates the historic counties of Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset and Devon, and it is currently proposed that the thesis will focus on two or three of these counties in detail (work is currently underway on Wiltshire). For each county, the first step is to produce a database of all Early to Middle Saxon burials, including find spots of burial-indicative artefactual evidence (such as weapons and jewellery). Data from the PAS will be crucial in developing these databases.

Having just entered year 2 of the research programme, the thesis is expected to be completed in Autumn 2013.
