Torksey Research Project

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: External project (UK only)

Members: Julian Richards, Hannah Brown, Dawn Hadley, Jane Young, Gareth Williams, Rachel Atherton, Soren Sindbaek, Mark Blackburn, Andy Woods

The aim of the project is to understand the role and significance of Torksey by plotting the chronological and spatial development of the various centres of activity, which have been tentatively identified through metal detecting. These include a putative Anglo-Saxon riverine ‘beach market’, the Viking winter encampment and wider trading site, the Anglo-Scandinavian burh and the Torksey ware kilns.

Members of the team will each take responsibility for a series of workpackages:

  1. Concordance and cataloguing of the existing evidence
  2. Geophysical survey to ascertain if it is possible to identify structural features associated with the Viking camp, ‘beach market’, and industrial sites.
  3. Fieldwalking and controlled metal-detector survey leading to identify activity foci and differentiation by dating and function
  4. Torksey pottery study
