The South Oxfordshire Landscape Project: Settlement, Fields and Territorial Organisation, c.500-1600

This is an interdisciplinary historical/archaeological project to investigate the development of medieval settlement and landscape in south Oxfordshire, an area characterised both by nucleated villages and open fields (in the clay vale), and by dispersed settlement and wood pasture (in the Chilterns uplands).

The project would run in partnership with the Victoria County History (VCH), a highly respected local history research project which has close informal links with the History Faculty. The research outcomes would be greatly enriched by such cooperation. The project, which has the enthusiastic support of the History Faculty Board as a joint Faculty initiative with the VCH,would also draw on the expertise of specialists from Oxford University History Faculty and elsewhere (e.g. Professor John Blair, Professor Chris Wickham, Professor Helena Hamerow, Dr Ros Faith, Dr Kate Tiller, and Dr Rowena Archer at Oxford; Professor Chris Dyer at Leicester; and Dr Dawn Hadley at Sheffield). The project will help strengthen the relationship between the History Faculty and VCH, enhancing the Faculty’s outreach impact and links with city and county.

The 12-month development project will lead to a larger-scale application to an external funding body for a 3-year research project. The development project will yield valuable research outcomes in its own right, however, irrespective of whether the larger-scale application is successful.
