Between Svear and Danes

Principal investigator: Liam
Level: Major publication

Recently retired (August 1st, 2010) professor of archaeology at the Linnaeus University, Kalmar, Sweden. At present I am writing a book about a project funded by the Swedish research council in which I together with the archaeologist Charlotte Fabech, studied societies "between Svear and Danes" in the period 200-700 A.D. Our perspective is European. Our source material consists of grave finds, hoards, and settlement finds, all set in its landscape. Compare my study “The ethnogenesis of the Danes and the making of a Danish kingdom.” In: T. Dickinson & D. Griffiths (eds) 1999. The making of kingdoms. Oxford: Oxford University Committee for Archaeology/Oxbow (= Anglo-Saxon Studies in Archaeology and History 10): 1-10. In a book by a Dutch colleague I found references to a lot of interesting Anglo-Saxon finds made in England and he refers to the PAS. We are interested to be able to check his information. We are also involved in a discussion about the differences in the legal attitudes to metal detecting in Denmark (allowed) and Sweden (forbidden) and its effects on the development of archaeological knowledge.
