The county of the West Midlands is one of the most urbanised and densely populated areas of the country. The area contains three large cities Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. The region also consists of Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall.
Archaeological sites to visit in the region include Halesowen Abbey, the remains of an abbey founded by King John in the 13th century; Weoley Castle, the ruins of a fortified manor house built 750 years ago. The large industry of coal mine, iron foundries, glass factories, brickworks and steel mills that shaped the black country are now gone however you can still visit the canals which helped transport goods from the region.
