Museums and Groups in Surrey

There are plenty of ways to get involved with the history and archaeology of Surrey. Why not visit a museum or join an archaeological society?

Many Portable Antiquities Scheme finds can be seen on display at museums around the county (see the links that accompany the descriptions below).

 

Museums

Museum of Farnham

The Museum of Farnham is a local history museum, located in a beautiful Georgian town house with many original features and a delightful walled garden. Discover Farnham’s history, from its prehistoric roots to its hop growing boom and Georgian grandeur. The museum is also home to an extensive art and craft collection thanks to the many artists and crafts people who have been drawn to Farnham over the years.

Chertsey Museum

Collections on the history of the Runnymede area, the local archaeology and history of Chertsey Abbey, social history, local clocks and the nationally significant Olive Matthews Collection of dress and textiles.

Guildford Museum

History and archaeology collections from prehistoric times to the present day. A variety of Portable Antiquities Scheme finds are on display here including a Bronze Age hoard (SUR-0FB890).

Spelthorne Museum

The Museum is devoted to the history of Spelthorne, which includes Ashford, Laleham, Shepperton, Staines, Stanwell and Sunbury and is the only establishment of this kind in the Borough. The archaeology collection is one of major importance in Surrey.
