Kent Finds, July-September 2020

We’re back! And in this issue we find out what the FLO has been up to during lockdown, have a look at some of the great recently recorded finds and some which have been recently updated. We also have a great guide on photographing your finds when you want to send images to the FLO. As well as important information on future recording.

March 2020, what now?

Hello Kent Finders!

As we are all aware Covid-19 and the restrictions to counter the virus are heavily restricting how we can all operate. Here at the PAS in Kent this is no different. Withimmediate effect we will not be able to meet finders, attend meetings or return finds as we’ve been asked to work at home.

In the meantime, regarding treasure we will work as we did during Christmas and holiday periods. Let the FLO know with an image, the findspot, date of find and the contact details (including email where possible) for you and your landowner.

For the duration of the period of isolation we’d still like to keep things ticking over with easy to record objects like coins, tokens and jettons. So, for these nice flat objects if you can get us a nice clear image with a scale, the findspot, diameter and weight we can do records like this until we can begin taking records in again. For all other finds and finds return please bear with us and when we can get back to meeting people, we will reinstitute finds surgeries with Maidstone continuing on the 2nd Thursday of the month and all other surgeries in the following order: Sittingbourne, Canterbury, Hythe, Tonbridge, Margate Ashford Dartford and Dover.

In the meantime, the FLO will be working through treasure backlogs, self-recorded records and sorting out plans for the rest of the year, how to manage club visits in the future and a new full Kent finds with first in our new series of near and far.

We apologise for this; hope you will understand and wish all our friends a safe few months.

See you on the other side.Jo and the PAS in Kent team. March 18th 2020

_

The second point is, as many of you know we’ve  been considering a finds hiatus. We’ve now decided to bring this in, so between now and the end of August we shall only be taking in Treasure cases or significant finds/important finds.

_

We’ve had to bring this in as we want to implement new systems for processing treasure, process the treasure cases currently in the system and clear a group amount of uncollected finds and treasure which needs to be emptied from the safe.

_

And finally I am sure everyone is aware we’ve seen a rise of illicit detecting across the country, whether this is on private permission, archaeological digs or scheduled monuments. Along with this some altercations between these people, legitimate detectorists, farmers and landowners have also occurred. This culminated over the weekend by a recent nighthawking incident in Yorkshire which left two farmers in a serious condition in hospital. As always be careful with talking with these people.

_

The advice is always let the landowner know if they don’t already, call the police on 999 should they still be on the field and or they become hostile. Always try and do this in a safe place. Also let the FLO the details along with the crime number so they can chase it up. If you don’t want to go to the police yourself with evidence please pass it onto me and I can pursue it with the police. Number plates and photography is important here if you can get them.

_

If anyone has questions about any of the above please get in contact with the FLO and they will do their best to get back to you on their return.

_
