Cheshire’s Treasure
On this day 20 years ago the 1996 Treasure Act came into force. This important Act allows museums across the country to acquire Treasure items for their collection, curating them and protecting them for the nation. Items which are 10% or more precious metal and over 300 years old are officially ‘Treasure’. For coins, two …more
I survived my first rally!
I’ve been really lucky to have been working with Vanessa for nearly 12 months as her Intern and over that period I feel like I have dealt with the whole range of PAS “jobs” – treasure cases, metal detector clubs, finds surgeries and photoshopping. Vanessa thought it would be “good for me” to experience a …more
Processing finds for PAS
Over the past few months I’ve been working with the Finds Liaison Officer, Vanessa Oakden, photographing finds and editing the images; producing clear images to be uploaded onto the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) database. This blog will focus on the medieval coin finds in Cheshire. Volunteering with the PAS is extremely useful for my research into …more

It is a lovely little group of five silver denarii deposited within a lead cone shaped container with a lead disc stopper. The coins are all of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus, dated AD 194–8. …more
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks…
There must be some truth in this old and well used adage because it is one of the oldest proverbial sayings in the English language and there are many citations of it; the earliest example in print is in John Fitzherbert’s ‘The Boke of Husbandry, 1534’, when even then it was regarded, “an old saying”. …more
Recording finds in Chester
Today I was visiting the Grosvenor Museum in Chester where I hold finds day on the second Friday of each month. My day started well with a queue of three visitors as soon as the doors were open. The first finder was a local metal detectorist who frequently records his finds on the PAS database. …more
