This year marks 15 years of the Portable Antiquities Scheme as a national scheme. Throughout the year we’ll be celebrating finds from each county – a find a day for the whole year! Here are the finds we’ve chosen that were donated to museums by their finders:
Early Medieval strap end (WILT-DB8D60): A silver strap end depicting two intertwined beasts.
Iron Age fob (SUR-8328CA): A copper alloy fob or dangler with birds on each terminal.
Roman finger ring (NLM-74D2F2): A silver finger ring with intaglio depicting Mars Gravidus.
Neolithic adze (NMS-E23509): A part-ground and polished flint adze.
Medieval brooch (BH-A55524): A silver brooch depicting two inward-facing dragons.
Bronze Age palstave (WILT-0323E2): A copper alloy palstave.
Post-medieval seal matrix (HAMP-38D344): A silver seal matrix bearing the coat of arms of Rev. Dr. Edward Layfield, who was Archdeacon of Essex in 1639.
