Salary: £ 14,523

Duration: 12 months full-time

Start date: ASAP

Salary: £14,523

Applications are invited for an HLF-funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary with Southampton City Council/The Medieval Pottery Research Group. The placement offers a superb opportunity to gain experience in working with a large assemblage of medieval pottery from an urban excavation. The successful candidate will develop an understanding of every stage of analysis, including methods of classification, recording, data analysis and report-writing, leading to the preparation of a report for publication. At the same time, ongoing work with the City Council’s resident Archaeology Unit will provide the chance to produce assessment and spot-dating reports for smaller assemblages from evaluations and watching briefs.

This is an excellent opportunity to receive ongoing training under the supervision of Duncan H. Brown, Curator of Archaeology at Southampton Museums, and medieval pottery expert. Dr. David Williams, of the Department of Archaeology at Southampton University, will act as mentor, providing independent guidance and support throughout the placement. Southampton University will also offer training opportunities as appropriate, in the form of attendance at lectures and access to laboratories and training in the use of equipment. There may also be an opportunity to use the experience gained in this placement towards a vocational Qualification in Archaeological Practice.

We welcome applications from candidates with archaeological training to degree level (or equivalent experience), with a strong interest in pursuing a career in medieval pottery or a related area. Candidates should have good IT skills and some archaeological fieldwork experience. The post will be based at the collections store of Southampton Museums, where the archaeology bulk finds collection is held. Southampton City Council is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all sectors of the community.

The closing date for applications is: Thursday 27th September 2007
