IFA Workplace Learning Bursary in Digital Survey Techniques

Applications are invited for an HLF funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary with AOC Archaeology Group. The post represents an excellent opportunity to obtain a wide range of archaeological survey and processing skills with a highly active archaeological consultancy engaged in programmes of digital survey development and research. The successful candidate will work on a programme of training, development and application under the supervision of Dr Graeme Cavers, Research Associate with AOC Archaeology Group and the University of Nottingham.  John Barber will act as mentor to provide the post holder with extra encouragement and support during the course of the placement. The post will be based in Edinburgh, at AOC Archaeology Group’s offices in Loanhead, but will involve travel around the UK and periods of staying away to undertake related project work.

The successful candidate will work closely with AOC’s existing programme of digital survey development, gaining training in the use of total stations, differential GPS and laser scanners in landscape, archaeological and historic building survey. He/She will develop expertise in the application of these techniques in the field, as well as advanced methods of data processing and integration in CAD and GIS environments, and will work with the survey team to develop new methods and protocols for digital recording in archaeology. There will be opportunities to gain experience in commercial archaeological practice as well as in research-driven fieldwork, and the candidate will gain a good familiarity with data standards for a wide range of purposes across the heritage industry. The candidate may have the opportunity to work towards a vocational Qualification in Archaeological Practice, and will be expected to make full use of opportunities for additional training on external courses offered as part of the programme.

We welcome applications from candidates with archaeological training to degree level (or equivalent experience), with a strong interest in pursuing a career in the heritage sector. Candidates should have good IT skills and some archaeological fieldwork experience.
