From February 2007 the British Museum, subject to parliamentary approval, will take over the functions which DCMS currently carry out in relation to administration of cases of Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996. An exciting opportunity has been created for two enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team as Assistant Treasure Registrars. The main purpose of this role is to take on the additional functions that principally relate to the valuation of finds, the servicing of the Treasure Valuation Committee and the payment of rewards.

You will be responsible for carrying out formal correspondence with finders, coroners and local museums relating to the valuation stages of the Treasure process. You will also be required to commission valuations from the panel of expert valuers and to support the Treasure Valuation Committee by preparing agendas, papers and supplying findings. The role also includes assisting the Treasure Registrar and current Assistant Treasure Registrar with duties and to respond to mail, email and telephone enquiries.

You will have a good standard of education to GCSE/O level and should have experience of word processing and databases. A basic knowledge of treasure artefacts and experience of digital technology are desirable. You should be organised and have the ability to co-ordinate and organise your workload. You will have accurate record-keeping skills and should have good written and verbal communication skills to allow for liaising productively with internal and external contacts at all levels.
