The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology. This data is published on www.finds.org.uk and is made available to the relevant Historic Environment Records. The post is funded in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
As Finds Liaison Officer you will make contact with members of the public including metal detector users; attend club meetings; explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act through giving talks; and record finds on the Scheme database.
The post holder will be jointly based at the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service at the Registry of Deeds in Wakefield and at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery, and will work closely with the Head and Deputy Head of Portable Antiquities.
This is a fixed term contract until 31 March 2008.
