Fixed Term Freelance Contract
The Portable Antiquities Scheme is offering a six month freelance contract to assist the West Midlands Finds Liaison Officers in recording archaeological finds. The Post Holder will be based at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and will be part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The Scheme is intended to strengthen links between metal detector users and archaeologists and to record archaeological objects found by members of the public.
The duty of the post holder will be to identify, catalogue and record objects and to input the data into the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database (www.finds.org.uk). The recording process includes making detailed descriptions of objects, taking accurate measurements, referencing objects and taking suitable images which are then to be enhanced and registered onto the database.
The post holder will be expected to have a good degree in archaeology or a related discipline or considerable relevant experience as well as experience of artefact identification and recording. Previous experience of working within an archaeological organisation with an emphasis on finds recording and processing would be an advantage.
The position is being offered as a six month freelance contract to run from 3rd October 2005 to 31st March 2006 and you will be expected to work 36.5 hours per week. The fee for the work is £8,400 payable in six monthly instalments of £1,400 in arrears.
The fee is fully inclusive of all expenses and you will be responsible for paying your own National Insurance, tax and pension contributions. You will be expected to provide evidence of your self-employed tax status to Birmingham City Council.
This is a freelance self employed appointment for a period of 6 months and in no way implies any employment directly with BCC.
